Lazy days in a hammock are a favorite in Pai....

.."Lazy days in a hammock are a favorite in Pai, along with just staring at the mountains and rivers... "

pronounced as "bai" or "bye"

The sleepy hippy town of Pai is situated 135kms northwest of ChiangMai, halfway to MaeHongSon. As you enter Pai area, the mountain road makes a meandering decline into a large green valley of padi fields and fruit groves. Pai is a tiny place with 4 main roads but offers a rich bohemian atmosphere where you can collect your thoughts and commune with nature. Trendy cafes and boutique B&B, slow pace of life and lots of cyclists and motorcyclists..

A decade ago, Pai was virtually unknown and today it has developed into a thriving, multi cultural town. Fortunately it has retained its down-to-earth feel and prices are still reasonable, making it especially popular with backpackers and free-spirits...who sometimes stay for months. Recent consciousness of health and environment has largely reduced the open consumption of opium or marijuana and even normal cigarettes are a rare scene !

Pai can be reached by bus, 3 - 4 hrs from ChiangMai and less from MaeHongSon. We rented a little car (we would recomend a 4wheeldrive) and it takes less than 2 hrs fr ChiangMai ..very good roads on highway. However off highway, watch out for the thousands of pot holes. Contrary to the many write-ups in the Net regarding the weather & road conditions on this
"MaeHongSon loop" , we assure you it is totally safe even in our normal city wheeler ! thanks to our Asian upbringing, we are much "toughened up" and can eat practically everything!

so Peterpatterpot takes to the road ... 1180km road trip, 1864 curves or even more..

ChiangMai - Pai (128kms)

ALL ABOUT PAI...

streets of Pai

the "Bridge over the River Kwai"

just reaching Pai, we crossed this WW2 Japanese Bridge- Tha Pai Memorial Bridge built in 1942 by the Japanese when they need transportation route fr ChiangMai to Myanmar. It is similar in stature to its famous counterpart, the Bridge over the River Kwai ! After bridge on your left, is a cute cafe with a postal theme decor. Fantastic coffee !

good coffee all over Pai...not to miss.

By accident again, we stumbled upon Pai's Autumn Harvest Festival - it sounds something like "AWK KUA" in Thai. A Street Party to greet our arrival in Pai that night !! What hospitality!

she thinks she's in Disneyland !

on our way to Pai Canyon, we came across the "MAGIC TREE" - tickle it and the leaves flutter !!... amazing - no tricks, no wind !

PONG DUET GEYSER ( some pool up to 90F )

PAI CANYON- CLIFF DROP OF 20m

getting lost off the H1096, end up at the delicately carved buddhist temple.. no idea what Wat it is !

Leaving ChiangMai early morning head up north along Highway107. At intersection take H1096 to Samoeng, go west to the Mae Sa Valley loop. We accidentally took a off-road and end up at Doi-Suthep Pui National Park with the Tiger Kingdom ! a treat for Peterpatterpot indeed! cuddle up with the tigers, really !

This little town snuggled in a picturesque valley between ChiangMai and Mae Hon Son in the North, has a peaceful atmosphere that soothes away the stresses of ciy life as well as offering plenty of adventurous options like trekking and caving. Pai does not appear on the itineraries of any big tour companies and thus offer a bucolic experience.

Pai is now accessible by plane and in fact the highway from ChiangMai is the "autobahn" of Thailand or North-South Highway of Malaysia ! Very good condition

Pai is almost 128kms along the road to Mae Hong Son and the route over the hills offers some of the most attractive scenery in the north. Most of Pai's attractions are outside the town.
Several buses leave ChiangMai each day and cover the journey in about 4 hrs, but hiring a jeep, car or bike cuts travelling time down to less than 3 hrs !
Rental jeeps starts at about 800Baht a day and motorbikes can be as low as 100Baht ! - thats whay they say in the Net. But in reality prices are higher..range from 950baht (small car auto) - 1800baht (4 wheeldrive ). There's no more manual vehicles for rent.

The route from ChiangMai to Pai follows Highway 107 north for about 35km to Mae Malai, from where Highway 1095 turns left and heads for the hills. Just 18km along this road, a left turn leads just 2 km to Mok Fah waterfall, one of many intriguing diversions along the way. We manage to go to Pembok Waterfall entrance, but too learly in morning to take a hike up of 2km ! detoured to Sapan for coffee instead.

After the Falls, the road soars and swoops into the hills, its countless bends bringing increasingly spectacular views across misty mountain ridges.... The Hillsides are heavily wooded with bamboo and pine.
Brightly dressed hill people of the Lahu, Lisu and Karen tribes can be found here but we decided to skip this here and get to MaeHongSon district before nightfall. And visit the Paduang Karen Long Necks Village in MaeHongSon later.

nice toilets..

BAN THAM LOD

Villagers await with lanterns and rafts to take you thru the caves - namely Entrance Cave, Doll Cave & Coffin Cave.
